Who doesn’t love sugar cookies? They’re classic, sweet, and oh-so-satisfying. But finding the perfect gluten-free version can be tricky. Don’t worry I’ve got you covered! These gluten-free sugar cookies are soft, buttery, and perfectly sweet, just like the traditional ones. Plus, they’re easy to make and absolutely delicious!
Method
Preheat & Prep
To start, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. This helps prevent the cookies from sticking and makes cleanup much easier. Preparing your baking sheets ahead of time ensures that you can move quickly once the dough is ready.
Mixing Ingredients
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, crack the egg and whisk it lightly to break up the yolk. Add the vanilla extract and the melted butter. It’s important that the butter is melted but not hot, as hot butter could partially cook the egg, creating lumps. Whisk these ingredients together until they are thoroughly combined and the mixture looks smooth and slightly creamy.
Next, add the dry ingredients: almond flour, gluten-free flour, sugar, and baking powder. Start by stirring them in gently to prevent the flour from puffing out of the bowl. Once they are partially incorporated, use your hands to bring the mixture together into a cohesive dough. The dough should be soft but not overly sticky, forming a smooth ball when pressed together.
Roll & Cut
Lightly dust your countertop with a bit of the gluten-free flour to prevent sticking. Place the dough on the floured surface and gently roll it out using a rolling pin. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch, as this will ensure the cookies are soft in the center while having a slight crisp around the edges. Take your favorite cookie cutters and press them into the dough, carefully lifting each shaped piece and transferring it to the prepared baking sheet. Space the cookies about an inch apart to give them room to expand during baking.
Bake
Place the baking sheets in the preheated oven and bake for 8 to 9 minutes. Keep an eye on them as they bake the cookies when the edges start to turn a light golden color. Avoid overbaking, as gluten-free cookies can dry out quickly. Once baked, remove the sheets from the oven and let the cookies rest for a few minutes on the baking sheet to firm up slightly. This helps maintain their shape when transferring.
Decorate & Enjoy
After cooling on the baking sheets for a few minutes, transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely. Once they are at room temperature, it’s time to get creative! I love using misshoneybakes vanilla frosting and wholefoods natural food coloring to decorate. Feel free to add sprinkles or drizzle with melted chocolate for a festive touch!

- Mixing Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until well combined. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients – almond flour, gluten-free flour, sugar, and baking powder until a dough forms. Use your hands if needed to shape the dough into a ball.
- Roll & Cut: Lightly flour your countertop with extra gluten-free flour. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use your favorite cookie cutters to make shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheets
- Bake: Bake the cookies for 8-9 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden. Let them cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
- Decorate & Enjoy: Once completely cool, decorate as you like. I used misshoneybakes vanilla frosting and wholefoods natural food coloring!
Notes
- Make sure your melted butter is not hot when mixing; otherwise, it might cook the egg!
- If the dough feels too sticky, add a bit more flour while rolling it out.
- Don’t overbake! These cookies should have slightly golden edges, not browned tops.
