Today was one of those cozy afternoons that just needed cookies. On our walk home from school, Selena turned to me with the sweetest smile and said, “Can we bake some cookies together?”
Of course, I said YES! I mean, who can say no to warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookies? They’re classic, comforting, and always a crowd-pleaser.
We used our favorite recipe the good old @nestletollhouse chocolate chip cookie recipe. And let me tell you… it never fails. It’s soft, chewy, and packed with melty chocolate chips. Yum!
Let’s get baking!
Method (In Depth)
Preheating the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This step is important because you want your oven to be nice and hot by the time your dough is ready. Cookies need consistent heat right from the start to bake evenly and get that perfect golden edge with a soft center.
Mixing the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, combine your dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, and salt. Give it a good stir using a whisk or spoon until everything is evenly mixed. This step ensures the baking soda and salt are spread out through the flour, so each bite gets the perfect texture and taste. Once it’s all mixed together, set this bowl aside while you get started on the wet ingredients.
Creaming the Butter, Sugars & Vanilla
In a large mixing bowl, add the softened butter, granulated sugar, packed brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Use a hand mixer (or stand mixer if you have one) and beat the mixture until it becomes light and fluffy. This is called “creaming” the butter and sugars, and it’s a really important step. It helps create air pockets in the dough, which makes your cookies soft and chewy instead of dense and heavy. The mixture should look smooth and creamy before moving on.
Adding the Eggs
Next, add the eggs one at a time into the butter-sugar mixture. Beat well after adding each egg so it blends in completely. Eggs help hold everything together and give your cookies richness. Make sure not to rush this part you want everything to be smooth and well combined before moving on to the dry ingredients.
Mixing in the Dry Ingredients
Now, slowly add the dry ingredients from the medium bowl into the wet mixture. You can add a little at a time and mix on low speed to keep the flour from puffing up all over the place! Mix until everything is just combined don’t overmix. Overmixing at this stage can make your cookies tough instead of soft and tender.
Adding the Chocolate Chips
Here comes the most exciting part the chocolate chips! Pour in those delicious chips and gently stir them into the dough using a spoon or spatula. You can use semi-sweet chips, milk chocolate, or even a mix of both! Make sure the chips are evenly spread throughout the dough so each cookie is filled with chocolatey goodness.
Scooping and Placing the Dough
Using a spoon or cookie scoop, drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or sprayed with nonstick spray. Make sure to leave some space between each scoop, about 2 inches, because the cookies will spread while baking. This helps them keep their shape and prevents them from sticking together.
Baking the Cookies
Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the cookies for about 9–11 minutes. Keep an eye on them you’re looking for lightly golden edges while the centers might still look a little soft. That’s totally okay! The cookies will keep baking slightly even after you take them out of the oven.
Cooling
Once baked, let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 2 minutes. This gives them time to firm up just a bit so they won’t fall apart when you move them. After 2 minutes, carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. If you can resist the temptation, that is they smell amazing fresh out of the oven!

2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup butter, softened
¾ cup granulated sugar
¾ cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups chocolate chips
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Always do this first so it’s ready to go!
- Mix the dry stuff: In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set it aside for now.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugars, and vanilla together until it’s nice and creamy. (This is where the magic starts!)
- Add the eggs, one at a time. Mix well after each one.
- Slowly mix in the dry ingredients. Take your time here so the flour doesn’t fly everywhere!
- Now for the best part stir in the chocolate chips!
- Use a spoon or cookie scoop to drop spoonfuls of dough onto your baking sheet. Leave some space they’ll spread!
- Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
- Let them cool on the sheet for 2 minutes, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely. If you can wait that long!
Notes
- Make sure your butter is softened, not melted butter can make your cookies flat and greasy.
- Don’t overmix the dough after adding flour. Mix just until combined to keep the cookies soft.
- Leave space between the cookies on the sheet they spread while baking!
- Don’t wait too long to move them off the baking sheet they can keep cooking and get too crispy underneath.

Serving Suggestions
- Serve warm with a big glass of cold milk (classic move!)
- Stack a few with ice cream in between for homemade ice cream sandwiches
- Bring them to school events or parties they’ll disappear fast!
- Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top before baking for a fancy twist
Fun Fact
Did you know the chocolate chip cookie was invented by accident? In the 1930s, Ruth Wakefield ran out of baker’s chocolate and used chopped-up Nestlé chocolate instead. Surprise! The chocolate didn’t melt all the way and the world’s most loved cookie was born.
Conclusion
These chocolate chip cookies are one of my favorite things to bake, especially with my little helper Selena. It’s not just about the cookies it’s about the time spent together, the smell of warm dough filling the kitchen, and sneaking a few chocolate chips along the way.
Next time you’re craving something sweet, give this recipe a try. I promise, you’ll love every bite!
Happy baking!
